3. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS
3.1 Design. The machine furnished shall be new and of the manufacturer's current production models capable of performing crimping, beading, or crimping and beading operations. The type of rolls being used determines the product's function. When fitted with crimping rolls, the machine shall perform crimping operations. When fitted with beading rolls, the machine shall perform beading operations. When fitted with crimping and beading rolls, the machine shall perform crimping and beading operations. The machine shall include all components, parts, and features necessary to meet the above operations.
3.2 Frame. The frame shall be capable of withstanding all forces encountered during operation of the machine to its maximum capacity without any temporary or permanent distortion.
3.3 Mounting. The machine shall be furnished with provisions for bench mounting. This may be accomplished by the use of an integral frame and stand or by providing a stand that may be clamped to a bench. If specified (see 7.4(c)), a floor stand shall be furnished.
3.4 Gears. All gears shall be cast iron or machine cut steel and shall be totally enclosed or guarded to protect the operator.
3.5 Rolls. The machine's rolls shall have a hardness of between 52 and 62 on the Rockwell "C" scale when tested in accordance with the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Standard E 18, "Standard Test Methods for Rockwell Hardness and Rockwell Superficial Hardness of Metallic Materials" (DoD adopted). Unless specified otherwise (see 7.4(d)), the following rolls shall be furnished:
a. Size 18, 20, and 22 machines
(1) One pair of 3/8 inch single beading rolls
(2) One pair of 3/4 inch ogee (OG) beading rolls
b. Size 24 machines
(1) One pair of 1/4 or 5/16 inch single beading rolls
(2) One pair 3/4 inch OG beading rolls
c. Size 18, 20, 22, and 24 machines
(1) One pair of crimping rolls
(2) One pair of crimping and beading rolls
3.6 Hand crank. The machine shall be furnished with a hand crank that shall be of sufficient length to allow normal and smooth operation of the machine.
3.7 Upper roll adjustment. The upper roll shall be adjustable by means of a quick acting crank screw.
