specified herein, the condition and finish of all surfaces shall be in
accordance with the manufacturer's commercial practice.
3.3.4 Welding, brazing, or soldering. Welding, brazing, or soldering shall
be employed only where specified in the original design. None of these
operations shall be employed as a repair measure for any defective part.

3.3.7 Gears. All gears shall be constructed from a material suitable for
the intended purpose. All drive gears shall have the hardness, surface
finish, and toughness that will enable the gear train to transmit full rated
torque of the drive motor without gear damage, failure, or premature
deterioration and wear.
3.4 Components. The machine shall consist of not less than a pedestal and
base assembly, frame, horn, carriage, rolls, and electrical System.
3.4.1 Pedestal and base assembly. The pedestal and base assembly shall
support the frame, horn, and the powered carriage. The base shall have not
less than three mounting holes for securing the base to the foundation.
3.4.2 Frame. The frame shall support and direct the powered carriage along
the ways and guides. The outer end of the frame shall be constructed with a
mechanical latch for providing support to the outer end of the horn, and also
include features that allow easy mounting and removal of workplaces.
3.4.3 Horn. The horn shall have both flat and grooved longitudinal working
surfaces. The horn shall revolve and lock in position, to the desired working
surface, positioned properly under the carriage. Workpiece positioning on the
horn shall be adjustable by a movable stop.
3.4.4 Carriage. The carriage shall be mounted on the frame. An electric
motor driven mechanism shall provide forward and reverse carriage motions, at
speeds of not less than 70 feet per minute. Adjustable stops shall halt the
forward carriage motion, and the carriage motion shall be reversed by a manual
control.
3.4.5 Rolls. Rolls shall be supported by the carriage with a means for
adjusting rolling pressure, on the workpiece. Rolling action shall start
with one roller contacting the workpiece on the outward travel, and another
alternately, on the inward or return stroke. Rolls shall be designed to
accomplish lock seaming on both single and Pittsburg seams. Three (3) grooved
and two (2) flat rolls for single lock seaming, and two (2) closing rolls for
Pittsburgh lock seams shall be provided with each grooving machine.
3.4.6 Electrical system. The electrical system shall be wired to conform
to NFPA 79. Unless otherwise specified (see 6.2), each machine shall be wired
to draw all of its electrical power from a single 230/460-volt, 3-phase,
